2015-best-of-photoeye

photo-eye best book 2015: Ring in the holiday cheer with photobooks by women. As 10×10 started brainstorming on a “Best of List,” we were struck by how many really great photobooks are being made by the bloke-esses (as our British 10×10 colleague would say). Here’s to a Ladies Only list!

Waplington

In 1991 Nick Waplington released the classic photobook Living Room, a project chronicling the lives of two working class families on the Broxtowe Estate, Nottingham (UK) where he had been visiting his grandfather since 1984. This exceptionally insightful work launched Nick into the photo world and he received much critical acclaim, including the ICP Infinity Award for Best Young Photographer in 1993. Now in 2015 Nick has chosen to revisit this material publishing a small edition with Little Big Man entitled “Living Room Work Prints” based upon the contents of a box of work prints used for editing the book in 1989/90. If you would like to find out more about this meaningful work then please join us for an artist talk with the man himself. The book will be available for purchase afterwards.

Yokota+Yamatani

On view at the ICP-Bard Studios during the New York Art Book Fair at PS1 MoMA, will be two pop-up exhibitions highlighting contemporary Japanese photography and photobooks.

10×10 will present a reading room of photobooks by young Japanese photographers from the past 10 years. The selection will reflect holdings from the International Center of Photography’s vast collection of Japanese photobooks and present an overview of the diverse photographic voices now gaining attention in Japan. Included among the more than 30 photobooks on view will be books by Daisuke Yokota, Shimpei Takeda, Sakiko Nomura, Hiroshi Takizawa and Yusuke Yamatani.

In addition, Daisuke Yokota, an emerging Japanese photographer who received the John Kobal Residency Award at Photo London 2015, will present a selection of abstract color photographs in his first American exhibition organized by Harper’s Books (East Hampton, NY) and Flying Books (Tokyo). Known for his interdisciplinary and energetic approach to art and book making, Yokota is helping to redefine the image in the post-photography era. The Opening for the Yokota show will coincide with Print & Play: Japanese Photobooks.

As big fans of photo-eye, we were honored to be invited to select 10 “best of 2013” photobooks for their annual round-up.

Three people collaboratively selecting ten photobooks for a “best of 2013” list. Not an easy task. It requires a lot of discussion to see where there is overlap and where there is not. It can make for a bit of dysfunction. We started to notice that not just the process, but also many of the books on our list dealt with dysfunction in one way or another. A dysfunction that incites a discussion – much like our 10×10 practice. Here is our admittedly dysfunctional list for the best photobooks of 2013.

Read our selections on the photo-eye blog.

Here are a few of the books from our selection:

Igor Samolet. “be happy!”

Leiko Shiga Rasen Kaigan

Kosuke Okahara. “Vanishing Existence”

Pino Musi. “_08: 08 Operating Theatre”
